Remote Community Energy

There are close to 70 remote communities in B.C. that are not connected to the major natural gas or electricity grid.  These communities have challenges and opportunities in their energy systems that are very different than grid connected communities.  The Ministry’s community energy solutions support in these communities is tailored to these unique situations.         Remote Community of Hartley Bay, BC

Remote Community Energy Network:

The Province of British Columbia, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, BC Hydro, and the First Nations Technology Council are working together through a Remote Community Energy Network (RCE Network).

The objective of the RCE Network is to assist B.C. remote communities in implementing community energy solutions by coordinating access to network members’ programs.  RCE Network members’ individual programs include support for energy education and training, community energy planning, utility service provision, clean energy development, energy efficiency and energy monitoring.

Remote Community Regulation:

The Remote Communities Regulation was issued in conjunction with Special Direction 10 to support the 2007 Energy Plan Policy Action #27 that allows BC Hydro to offer electric utility service to interested and eligible remote communities.

Energy Saving Kits:

Available FREE to all remote community households!

Offered in partnership with the BC First Nations Energy Council and BC Hydro, each kit contains equipment and advice to help your remote community save energy and reduce energy costs.  Information sessions will be scheduled in each community prior to distributing kits.
