The Sierra Yoyo Desan Road (SYD Road), located north and east of Fort Nelson, starts 15 kilometres from the Alaska Highway and extends 173 kilometres to its end at the South Helmet airstrip.
Implementation of the Public-Private Partnership (P3) for SYD Road
On June 17, 2004, the SYD Road public-private partnership (P3) agreement between the then Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources (MEMPR) and Ledcor Projects Inc. was signed. Since then, major improvements have been implemented.
-
The building of a new 22-kilometre section of road to bypass the existing Clarke Lake Road.
-
The building of a new two-lane bridge over the Fort Nelson River, which opened on Nov. 1, 2004. This bridge eliminates the need to use the BC Rail train bridge and the Clarke Lake switchbacks.
-
The replacement of the Snake River Bridge and Petro-Canada Bridges 1 and 2.
Upgrade and Maintenance Contract
On August 1, 2004, SYD Road Limited Partnership and its general partner, Ledcor SYD Limited, assumed maintenance obligations for the SYD Road. The remainder of the upgrade work on the SYD Road was completed over the summer of 2005.
