The Core Facility Experience

The well-lit and spacious facility offers year-round heated indoor viewing of samples and cores.  Carpets have been replaced with fatigue mats to make standing for long periods of time while examining core more comfortable.

Facilities include:

  • four functional areas: a business reception area, a core and drill cuttings processing area, a core and drill cuttings examination area with examination tables and booths, and the warehouse storage area;
  • ten core examination tables with fully height-adjustable roller tables and a sliding table tray for both microscope, examination tools, and note taking; and
  • an area with two examination tables which can be reserved by company staff to view and examine confidential core.

In the processing and examination areas, staff provide administrative and technical support.

Requesting Core and Reserving Tables

You can make online table and core reservations through the Geological Facility System.

To request Core Facility services, contact the facility by phone or fax.  You will need to provide the well authorization number or surface location and the well depths

In addition to tour requests, there are three kinds of request.

  • A drill cuttings examination request reserves drill cuttings, a drill cuttings viewing booth and, if required, a storage locker or other services.
  • A core examination table request reserves core samples, an examination table and, if required, confidential tables, storage lockers or other services.
  • A conference room reservation reserves a conference room and, if required, other services.

There are 2 locations for viewing the materials: the MEMPR Core Facility in Charlie Lake, B.C. and the Geological Survey of Canada core and sample repository in Calgary, AB.  To request removing core for examination, use the Core Removal Application Form  45.6KB.

Please note: Drill cuttings can only be examined in house; they cannot be removed from the facility.

Shipping Core and Drill Cuttings to the Facility

These forms need to be used when new core and drill cuttings are submitted from the well site to the Geological Facility storage location.

NOTE: These forms replace old forms used before May, 2004 for core removal application, notice of shipment of drill cuttings and notice of shipment of core samples.
