Mine Safety Awards
The Mine Safety Awards were established in 1961 by the B.C. Minister of Mines and Petroleum Resources to recognize the safety record of mines in this province. Each year, these awards honour mining operations for their safety accomplishments.
The Mine Safety Awards consist of 2 competitions and 5 different awards.

Achievement Award
Awarded to mines with at least 15,000 work hours and the lowest lost-time accident frequency. |
Stewart/O’Brian Award
Awarded to mines with 35,000 to 200,000 worker hours and the lowest lost-time accident frequency. |
Small Underground Mine Award
Awarded to the small underground mine with the lowest lost-time accident frequency and 2,500 to 30,000 man shifts with one third of these underground. |

Edward Prior Award
Awarded to the mine with 200,000 to one million worker hours and the lowest lost-time accident frequency. |
John Ash Award
Awarded to the mine with at least one million worker hours and the lowest lost-time accident frequency. |
All producing mines (i.e., a mine that is permitted for production rather than an exploration site) in B.C. which have accumulated the required number of worker hours and have no fatalities in the competition year are eligible. Contractor hours are included within worker hours. Award winners have the lowest lost-time accident frequency (the number of lost-time accidents multiplied by 200,000 and divided by the number of hours worked).
Adjudication of the awards is conducted by the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources' Health and Safety group, which includes:
