Surficial geologists study the nature, distribution, age, and origin of deposits and landforms formed in the last 2.6 million years (Quaternary Period). Understanding the surficial geology of British Columbia has direct applications in the areas of mineral exploration, aggregate (sand and gravel) exploration and production, natural hazard forecasting and mitigation, engineering, agriculture, forestry, waste disposal, coastal management, land use, archeology, anthropology, and environmental studies.
