Fil provides support and leadership for the many professional geoscientists who collect field and laboratory data on the provinces mineral resources. Fil helps guide ongoing projects and is involved in the initiation and shepherding of new programs. These projects better define the province’s known mineral resources and also highlight areas where potential may exist.

Fil has a strong background in structural geology and regional mapping. After graduating from his Master’s program, he worked as a petroleum geologist with Dome Petroleum Ltd. between 1985 and 1987 overseeing exploration and development within the Foothills of northeast British Columbia. In 1987, Fil joined the British Columbia Geological Survey Branch as a regional mapper, focusing on porphyry potential within the northern part of the Quesnel terrane and massive sulphide potential in adjacent rocks in the Slide Mountain and Cassiar terranes. Between 1999 and 2002, Fil mapped the complexly folded geology in the Wells – Barkerville area in hopes of better understanding the geological setting of the newly discovered Frank Creek massive sulphide occurrence.
In 2002, due to restructuring, and based on Fil’s background, he joined the newly created geoscience group within the oil and gas arm of the BC Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. Fil worked as part of an inter-governmental and inter-disciplinary team between 2002 and 2008 mapping the Bowser, Sustut and Nechako basins and collecting data to better define the oil and gas potential of these Intermontane basins. Fil returned to his mapping roots in 2008 when he began a regional mapping program in the Foothills of northeast BC that would assist in the delineation of potential hydrocarbon targets in one of the least explored and high risk parts of the province. Around this time, the advent of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing ushered in the full scale development of shale and tight gas resources leading industry to move away from conventional oil and gas targets. As such, Fil focused on the stratigraphic and lithogeochemical characterization of shale gas sequences in northeast BC between 2010 and 2018.
