A: MINFILE/pc General Help

 

BEFORE YOU START: For complete information on installing data and system
functions please see the User's Manual. These help screens summarize the
search, report, data entry and utilities functions.  

        

PROGRAMMED KEYS and CURSOR MOVEMENT:
F1         - Access to the help screen at any point in the program.
F9         - Go to DOS; Type EXIT to return to MINFILE/pc.
SPACE      - Returns to previous menu OR clears CHOICE.
ENTER      - Accept choice OR move from field to field.
ARROW KEYS - Move from field to field.

         

MAKING CHOICES: Fill in the appropriate field with your choice. When no
field is present, use arrow keys/enter, mouse click, or hot keys.

         

EXITING:
Menus  - Press SPACE bar or ESCape until the desired menu is reached.
System - Press ESCape until the Main Menu is reached then SELECT Exit.   

       

MOUSE: Limited mouse use is available to move between fields and to
select text in a filled field. Experiment with clicks and drags.

B: MINFILE/pc Search Help

 

GENERAL: Most searches are based on Boolean algebra (AND, OR, NOT) logic.
When a search is completed the system returns to the Search Menu. Select
other searches to further define search criteria. Use the Report Menu to
report the results. Use the Utility Menu to save (export) or recall
(import) search results and to reset the total number of occurrences.
The total may also be reset from the Search Menu. Data Entry may be used
for browsing search results.

         

CODES: Most search fields require codes. See ENTITY files, User's Manual
or the MINFILE Coding Manual. Friendly Finder, purchased separately, may
also be implemented.

         

KEYBOARD USAGE:
PgDn, PgUp or Ctrl+C - Executes a search.
Ctrl+C                - Cancels the screen if no fields are filled.
Ctrl+Q                - Back up to the previous screen.
Ctrl+U                - Moves cursor to the beginning of the field.
Ctrl+Y                - Deletes from the cursor to the end of the line.
ESCape                - Cancels a search.

C: MINFILE/pc Report Help

 

GENERAL: View, write to disk or print reports based on searches. Files
to disk are named RGEN????.RPT and are overwritten unless renamed.

         

REPORT DESCRIPTIONS: Modify device settings as required.
01 MINFILE Master           - All MINFILE data for each occurrence.
02 Production                - The yearly production and summary totals.
03 Capsule Geol./Bibliog.   - Only these two files are reported.
04 Map legend                - Map number, name and first 7 commodities.
44 Map commodity index      - Index to commodities in Map Legend Report.
05 Data dictionary control  - File names and number of records in each.
06 MINFILE number index     - Lists the SDF information by MINFILE number.
07 Primary name index       - Lists name, status, commodities and NTS map.
08 Primary commodity index  - Groups primary commodities.
09 NTS map index            - Lists by 1:50 000 NTS map areas.
10 Alphabetical index       - Lists all names alphabetically.
11 Commodity index          - Groups all commodities.
12 Confidential Notes       - Confidential comments on deposits.
50 Exploration Master       - All exploration data for projects.
51 Exploration & Devel.     - Lists work done on properties.
52 Expl. Reserve/Resource   - Lists reserve/commodity/grade of deposits.
53 MINFILE Reserve/Resource - Lists reserve/commodity/grade of deposits.

D: MINFILE/pc Utilities Help

 

GENERAL: Utilities assist in setting up the database, exporting and
importing data, and maintaining and configuring the system.

          

CHOICES:
Reset total deposit/projects  - Reset to total dataset after a search.
Import/Export search file     - Save or recall search results.
.MIN or .PRJ                   - MINFILE number or Project number only.
.SDF or .MBC                   - Standard Data file or Mineral Data BC file
                                in ASCII format.
.DBF or .WKS                   - Standard Data, QuikMap, or Mineral Data BC
                                files in dBASE or spreadsheet format.
Import/Export updates         - Transfer updated data between computers.
Import Notices from MIS sys   - Transfer in Notices of Work data.
Append/Delete data            - Add or delete all or parts of data. Batch
                                append bibliography. Assign regions.
Parcel/Archive functions      - Creates ASCII data. Archive Notices.
Pack/reindex database         - Clears out deleted records.
Renumber MINFILE occurrence   - Change number or duplicate occurrence.
Alter Working Coordinate Area - Set valid coordinates for input.
System Configuration          - Modify working environment.

E: MINFILE/pc MINFILE Database Help

 

GENERAL: The MINFILE Database allows you to add, delete or modify mineral
occurrence information.   

       

MINFILE DATA ENTRY: When you select data entry from the MINFILE menu,
you are placed in edit menu and the system lays up the identification
screen for the first MINFILE number in the database. You may select
from the following menu functions:   

       

DEPOSIT - Select an occurrence to edit from the MINFILE database.
SCREEN  - Select a screen to edit.
EDIT    - Select the mode in which you will edit the screen fields; then
          submit or undo the changes.
PRINT   - Print a Master report or Production report for the current MINFILE
          occurrence.
HELP    - Get help regarding data entry and shell to DOS. Alter working
          environment

F: MINFILE/pc Exploration Database Help

 

GENERAL: The Exploration Database allows you to create and maintain
exploration activity for projects and associate them with MINFILE
occurrences. Project exploration activity are also associated with
Notices of Work, which originate in the MIS system.  

        

PROJECT DATA ENTRY: When you select project data entry from the MINFILE
menu, you are placed in edit menu and the system lays up the project
screen for the first project in the database. You may select from the
following menu functions:

          

PROJECT    - Select projects from the project database.
SCREEN     - Select either the Project screen or a Notice of Work.
EDIT       - Select the mode in which you will edit the screen fields; then
             submit or undo the changes.
PRINT      - Print an Exploration Master report or Exploration Notes for the
             current project.
OCCURRENCE - This menu option allows you to access the MINFILE occurrences
             associated with a project.
HELP       - Get help regarding editing and shell to DOS. Alter working
             environment.

G: MINFILE/pc MINFILE Data Entry Help

 

DEPOSIT Function:
Select from list    - to select a deposit ([ESC] or [Enter]).
Previous in list    - to select the previous deposit in the list.
Next in list        - to select the next deposit in the list.
MINFILE No. Select  - to select a deposit using the MINFILE number.
Create              - to create a new mineral deposit.
Delete              - to delete a mineral deposit.
Append from Updates - to append a deposit from the \UPDATE directory.
Exit to Main Menu   - to exit the Data Entry System.  

        

SCREEN Function:
Identification     - name; status; location.
Mineral Occurrence - commodities; mineralogy; deposit information.
Host Rock          - stratigraphic names/ages of host rock; lithology.
Geological Setting - tectonic belt; terrane; physiographic; metamorph.
Reserves/Resources - zone; category; year; quantity; commodity; grade.
Production         - year; ore mined; ore milled; commodity; quantity.
Capsule Geology    - detailed text description of the occurrence.
Bibliography       - specific and general references on occurrence.
Notes              - confidential notes associated with the occurrence

Expl. Activity - not yet incorporated into the system.
Work History   - not yet incorporated into the system.

         

EDIT Function:
Append  - to add NEW data to single or multiple fields.
Revise  - to revise EXISTING data.
Browse  - to view multiple field windows.
Delete  - to delete an item from a list of multiple fields.
Move    - to move items within a list of multiple fields.
Insert  - to insert an item into a list of multiple fields.
Submit  - to submit the screen for edits and writing to the database.
Undo    - to cancel edits and restore screen to its original state.
Options - to select ore zone/category (Reserves) or year (Production).
Compare - to compare the screen to data in the \UPDATE directory.

1. Master report - MINFILE      - current deposit displayed.

HELP Function:
MINFILE/pc Help System        - to display Data Entry Help screens.
FRIENDLY FINDER :ON           - to enable/disable the use of Proximity Scan.
                                In the ON position, Proximity Scan will be
                                used to search the code table for proper
                                code descriptions. 
                                Pressing Enter toggles the option ON and OFF.
DOS Command Shell              - to temporarily exit to DOS. Use only simple
                                DOS file operations such as DIR, RENAME,
                                COPY, etc.
Alter Working Coordinate Area - Set valid coordinates for input.
System Configuration          - Modify working environment.

         

GENERAL CAUTION:
Please submit all requests for code table (entity) changes to the MINFILE
office for approval and processing. Changing the MINFILE database will
create incompatibilities with the Corporate (B.C. Geological Survey Branch)
MINFILE database.

MINFILE/pc Data Entry Help - Text Editing          

GENERAL: If you are using the editor that comes with MINFILE/pc, the
following notes will help. If you are using your own editor, consult
its manuals. Editors are used with Identification Comments, Capsule
Geology, Bibliography and Confidential Notes, within MINFILE Data Entry,
and with Exploration Notes, within Project Data Entry.  

        

CURSOR MOVEMENT KEYS:
Arrow Keys       - Moves cursor one character at a time.
PgUp or PgDn     - Moves cursor one window of text.
Home or End      - Moves cursor to start or end of current line.
Ctrl+Arrow (L/R) - Moves cursor one work to right or left.
Ctrl+Home or End - Moves cursor to start or end of text.   

       

KEY COMBINATIONS FOR SELECTING TEXT:
Shift+Arrow            - Selects one character or line at a time.
Shift+PgUp or PgDn     - Selects from cursor to start or end of text.
Shift+Home or End      - Selects from cursor to start or end of line.
Shift+Ctrl+Arrow       - Selects from cursor to start/end of word.

CONTROL KEYS AND MOUSE ACTION:
Ctrl+W or M or J     - Exit current edit and save any changes.
Ctrl+Q or [ or Esc   - Exit current edit without saving changes.
Click Upper Left Box - Exit and confirm save if any changes.
Right Side Bar       - Move screen up and down with mouse.
Double-click Title   - Reduce or expand text window.
Click and Drag Title - Moves position when in reduced window.

         

SELECT TEXT WITH MOUSE:
Click and Drag       - Select a range of characters.
Double-click         - Select a word.
Double-click & Drag  - Select a range of words.
Triple-click         - Select a line.

COMMANDS IN PULL-DOWN MENUS:
Menu Options     - Use first letter in menu to select options.
[Home] or [End]  - Moves cursor to left or right of menu.
[PgUp] or [PgDn] - Moves cursor to top or bottom of menu list.
[Arrow] Keys     - Moves cursor to select menu options.
[Enter]          - Select the desired function under cursor.
[ESC]            - Moves cursor to left menu.
Mouse            - Click left button on the desired menu item.  

        

COMMANDS IN SCREENS:
Selects Fields   - Use first letter of field.
[Home] or [End]  - Moves cursor to top or bottom of screen.
[PgUp] or [PgDn] - Moves cursor to top or bottom of screen.
[Arrow] Keys     - Moves cursor up or down the screen.
[Enter]          - Opens the selected field.
[Ctrl]+[Y]       - Deletes from the cursor to the end of the line.
[INS][DEL][BkSp] - Use when editing fields.
[ESC]            - Use to exit Edit Mode, field editing, or back out.
Mouse            - Select multiple fields by clicking on the field. Click
                   elsewhere on the screen to display the menu.

H: MINFILE/pc Project Data Entry Help

 

PROJECT Function:
Select from list      - to select a project ([ESC] or [Enter]).
Previous in list      - to select the previous project in the list.

Project No. Select    - to select a project using the PROJECT number.
Create                 - to create a new exploration project.
Delete                 - to delete an exploration project.
Exit to Previous Menu - to exit the Project Data Entry System.

SELECT EDIT
Append - to add NEW data to a single field or a list of items.

Undo   - to restore the screen to its original state.
Select - to select a range in Stratigraphic Names

DOS Command Shell      - to temporarily exit to DOS.  

        

KEYBOARD USAGE          

Pressing the first letter in a menu will select that option.
Home, PgUp, PgDn, End, and arrow keys may be used to scroll through
menu options.
Control-Y will delete from the cursor to the end of the line.
Insert, Delete, and BackSpace may be used when editing fields.
Escape is used to exit Edit Mode or editing a field.
