The Northwestern BC (NTS 104A/H) reconnaissance-scale stream sediment and water survey was completed in 2004 and the resulting field and analytical data were released in 2005. Stream sediment and water samples were collected in the Bowser Lake and Spatsizi River areas of northwestern British Columbia, a region north of Terrrace and southeast of Dease Lake. These samples have been analysed for their trace metal and other element content. The surveys cover over 18,500 square kilometers of the contiguous Bowser Lake (104A) and Spatsizi River (104H) map sheets, where, in addition to five past-producing copper-gold-lead mines and over 160 other mineral prospects, the Red Chris porphyry copper-gold deposit is at an advanced exploration stage. The world class Eskay Creek gold mine is immediately west of the surveyed area. Hazelton Group volcanic-sedimentary rocks hosting these deposits area are highly prospective for volcanogenic massive sulphide, epithermal gold-silver vein and copper-molybdenum porphyry mineralization. The Bowser Lake sedimentary rocks that underlie the eastern part of the survey area may have the potential for sedimentary-exhalative lead-zinc mineralization.
A total of 1463 stream sediment and 1458 water samples were collected from 1385 sites covering over 18,500 square kilometers at a density of one sample per 13.5 square kilometers. Sediment samples were analysed for Ag, Al, As, Au, Bi, Ba, Br, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cu, Eu, Fe, Ga, Hf, Hg, K, La, Loss-on-ignition, Lu, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Rb, S, Sb, Sc, Se, Sm, Sr, Ta, Tb, Te, Th, Ti, Tl, U, V, W, Yb and Zn. Water samples were analysed for pH, conductivity, Cl, F, NO3, SO4 and U. Filtered, acidified water samples from 320 of the sites were also analysed for 52 major and trace elements.
