Community Relations Branch staff develop and implement targeted stakeholder engagement programs around the province. BC's Energy Plan sets a clear course as new energy sources - such as bioenergy, geothermal, tidal, run-of-river, solar and wind - are explored; and traditional resource sectors, such as mining, hydro-electricity and oil and gas, are renewed.
B.C. is committed to engaging citizens in responsible resource development. The engagement model now in use in northeast B.C. will be the framework for new regional engagement.
Stakeholder engagement desired outcomes include:
- Opportunities for information sharing, involvement of dispute resolution of potential resource development issues for all stakeholders;
- Greater public support for responsible resource development;
- Creation of certainty, clarity and predicability regarding access to energy, mineral and petroleum resources; and,
- Benefits identified for communities, stakeholders and First Nations.
In addition to MEMPR's broad engagement initiatives, Regional Mine Development Review Committees, other agencies such as BC Hydro and the Oil and Gas Commission, government organizations such as the Environmental Assessment Office, and industry groups, also devote significant effort to engaging communities about the nature and benefits of resource development.
