As British Columbia’s population and economy grow, so too does the need for electricity. The Province is committed to British Columbia being self sufficient in electricity by 2016, with at least 90 per cent of supply coming from clean and renewable resources. British Columbia is taking a three-pronged approach to meeting its growing energy needs:
- The BC Energy Plan and Utilities Commission Act require utilities to look to ways to reduce the need for electricity;
- Utilities develop new sources of supply; and
- Utilities can contract for new supply from power developers.
British Columbia is fortunate to have a wide range of abundant clean or renewable electricity sources that can help meet our future needs.
